Ten years later the wounds are still fresh, the emotion is still high, the outrage is still visceral. As Americans we mark this anniversary with horror, fascination and dread. 9/11 tore a hole in the fabric of our national psyche that we struggle to patch even now. As we endeavor to mend the damage, are we willing acknowledge facts that we all too willingly ignored at the time? Will we face facts about what those who would terrorize us wanted? Will we spend another ten years believing comfortable but inaccurate platitudes like “they hate us for our freedoms”?

Will it make a difference?

I don’t know.

An honest acknowledgement of fact may not lead to truth but it is a damn fine place to start.

The terrorist don’t give a flying fuck about our freedoms, they don’t give a fuck about anything we do as long as we are doing it within the boundaries of our country. Remember the vitriol that spilled (mostly) from the right when the inaccurate reports surfaced that there would be a mosque built at ground zero? Many in our country were completely incensed that such a thing could possibly be allowed, tempers flared, blood boiled and it wasn’t even true… Not only that, it happened in a country FOUNDED on the concept that free expression of religion is fundamental. Osama Bin Laden objected to American military presence on soil his religion considered sacred. Imagine how simple it was for him to inflame the passions of religious people that were offended that a foreign country is interfering with their lives, in their region, and that these foreigners can easily be defined as infidels…

Cool down, I am not suggesting that there is ANY justification to the horrific acts that took place that Tuesday ten years ago today. What I am saying is that if we aren’t willing to “see” what occurred we diminish our capacity to react appropriately.

The world is NOT black and white, each time we try to distill it to the scope of a GOP talking point we reduce our nation and it’s capacity to the lowest common denominator… It wasn’t good enough then, it isn’t good enough now, it will not be good enough going forward.

An honest acknowledgement of fact may not lead to truth but it is a damn fine place to start.

It’s about time we start.

Really, think about it… The answer demands a deeper discussion than we have been having so far.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and back at the house

Preparations for influx of GOP louse;

Progress the target, like regs and healthcare,

Ready to face the teaparty stare;

The homeless and jobless put down their heads,

While hoping McCain would be upping his meds;

Mamma and I while shaking of heads,

were getting prepared, for next year with dread.

When out on the lawn, a loud sound like a truck,

So I sprang from the bed to see what the F&ck?

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon or some light source on new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of Orange-Glo to objects below,

It didn’t take long to discover the curse,

The new speaker arriving in a policy hearse,

With a weepy old driver, all glowing and junk,

I knew in a moment twas John Boehner drunk.

More rapid than vultures his cronnies they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Mining! now, Oil! now, Coal and Wall Street!

On, Wellpoint! on Pharma! regulations we’ll beat!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

We’ll strip away safety in a greed free for all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house with sinister plans,

A fistful of cash that the courts shoulda banned.

And then, in a twinkling, a sound very raw

The scratching and picking of each little claw.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

In the house he came striding like a rodeo clown.

He glowed, lava like, from his toes to his ears,

And his cheeks a’streaming with crocodile tears;

A bundle of lobbyists clung to his back,

Scratching and clawing to get their payback.

His eyes — how they watered! his dimples had tone!

His cheeks were like oranges, his nose like a cone!

His edge of his mouth it twitched ever quicker,

And the air of his breathe was thick with strong liquor;

The stump of a cigarette held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a tanned face and no doubt a tanned belly,

And a moral compass as steady as jelly.

He was radically rigid, and uncompromising,

The fact that I shuddered seemed hardly surprising;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had better have dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

Shredding the net for the poor, what a jerk,

And giving his finger to law with a boo,

defunded healthcare and financial regs too;

Then he sprang to his hearse, to his team gave a woot,

And away they all flew with their trickle up loot.

Ere he drove out of sight, you could just hear him rant

“Save all your progress? Hell no, you can’t!”

In our busy lives it is difficult to grab a little perspective on where we really stand.

This week is the perfect opportunity to regain our perspective, if only for a moment, and to acknowledge just how fortunate we truly are.

Of the many things that I am thankful for, it is these for which I am most grateful:

I’m alive. I know it’s fashionable to say that we have the best healthcare in the world but it just isn’t true and I’ve gotten far too close to be casual about it.

I have a job, as a bonus it’s a good one, many Americans are not so fortunate.

I have the love of perhaps the most wonderful woman in the world, something I’m grateful for everyday.

I never want for food, shockingly this is not the case for far too many Americans today.

Though I lost my father this year I was able to spend my vacation with him only weeks before he passed.

I’m thankful for the Veterans Administration, though we may have been fast and loose with the truth going to war, we never should be with our commitment to those who have served.

In these extraordinarily challenging times we have a President who has the intellectual chops to seriously consider serious issues.

The conversation, I’m grateful for the conversation. As loud and rancorous as it can be, it is the heart of our democracy. Hopefully we will find a way to move forward that rewards ideas and solutions as much as money is rewarded now, but the conversation is still vital to keeping the experiment moving forward.

Blessings to you and yours,

Rachel Maddow takes the GOP advocacy of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and boils down what it means to our democracy in terms so concise that one cannot fail to deduce that ordinary citizens should be horrified that these people have any influence on our elections. Politicians of all persuasions and the media that continue to treat this issue as a non-starter better take heed. Americans get a tad testy when overtly abused by the elite and if you think the Chamber of Commerce doesn’t qualify, think again.

Share this with everyone you know, this election may be that last time we have a chance to stem the tide of corporate cash drowning out the voices of the electorate.

NeoCon WTF

My regular readers will divide almost evenly between those who say “oh yeah, NeoCon Worlds Trade Fair, the big contract furniture show in Chicago at the Merchandise Mart” and those who say “Neocon! What the Fuck? has ArrghPaine gone over to the dark side?”

The fact of the matter is that my political views aside I have spent the bulk of my adult life in the contract furniture industry and this time of year my entire life is consumed by NeoCon Worlds Trade Fair, hence the sporadic tweeting and almost not existent blogging.

NeoCon will be June 14-17 at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, I will be in Chicago from June 9-18… I assume I will then return to ranting on a near daily basis, please carry the torch in my absence.

To the tune of Bobby McGee… apologies to Janis Joplin, none to the State of Arizona

Busted at the Home Depot, waitin’ fer a job
When I’s looking nearly colored as my genes
AZ coppers got me now, mostly cause my skin
and I don’t look like a man of means.
they pulled out my papers from my dirty red bandana
I’s telling them I was born American, n-yeah
Windshield wipers slapping time I’s, cuffed and standing in a line
Feeling like the Nazi’s treated Jews

Freedom’s just another word that ain’t for “you” brown dude
Nothing, I mean nothing honey in AZ, no no
Yeah feeling scared was easy Lord when they grab you
You know feeling scared was scary ‘nough for me
Scary ‘nough for me in bigot AZ

From the east Phoenix train yard to the depot in Tucson
The Bigots stalked and scared me to my soul
Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done
Yeah Bigots here are angry white and old
One day in April Lord, we let freedom slip away
we’re lookin’ for some justice, and I hope we find it
But I’d trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday
To be walkin’ free and proud in the sunshine

Freedom’s just another word that ain’t for “you” brown dude
Nothing, I mean nothing honey in AZ, no no
Yeah feeling scared was easy Lord when they grab you
You know feeling scared was scary ‘nough for me
Scary ‘nough for me in bigot AZ

La da la la la, la da la la la da la
La da da la la la Bigot AZ yeah
La da la la la, la da la la la da la
La da da la la la Bigot AZ yeah
La da la la la, la da la la la da la
La da da la la la Bigot AZ yeah
Lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo
Lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo
Lo lo lo lo lo lo Bigot AZ
Lo lo lo lo lo lo Bigot AZ

Lord you call it your freedom, call it your land
You step on rights just because you can
And and a Bigot oh, and a Bigot AZ yeah
Lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo
Hey hey hey Bigot AZ, lord.

La da la la la, la da la la la la la
Hey hey hey Bigot AZ yeah

Packing heat.

Per the request of @stopbeck I shot off a quick email to 1-800 Pack Rat this morning urging them to stop advertising on Mr. Beck’s show. If you would like to send them an email you can do so here. The content of the email is as follows:

I understand that you have been advertising on Glenn Beck’s show. Are you not aware of the hate and vitriol he spews on a daily basis? I am surprised that you would want your company to be seen as supporting behavior that is so damaging to the nation. I don’t have any immediate need for your services, but rest assured if I or anyone I know should require your services we will be calling PODS. Should you have a change of heart with regard to your sponsorship of Beck’s hate, I would love to hear of it so that I might publicly congratulate your corporate responsibility and recommend your services to all who would listen.

Respectfully,
