After the health care summit and the subsequent media trivialization of the debate that is of vital importance to perhaps 95% of the American population I have come to a conclusion. The Republicans do not want health care reform.

The Republicans didn’t want to pass Medicare.

The Republicans didn’t want to pass health care reform in 1993.

The Republicans don’t want to pass health care reform now.

The Republicans think that if, and this is a big if… If health care reform is going to pass, they want to once again stretch the gap between the haves and the have-nots.

Listen to the incremental pitch from the Republicans “we have to use an incremental approach, first we have to control costs”

Let us deconstruct that statement from politi-speak into reality. “We don’t want health care reform, but if tax payer dollars ARE going to be used, we want the money to go to people who already have insurance. Poor people will not vote for us anyway and we feel they are lazy scum and pretty much deserve their fate”.

The cynicism and myopic politics of their position is dangerous to the future of the country. The cost of healthcare as a percentage of GDP has exploded from 7% to more than 17% in the last 40 years and now the GOP thinks the problem is too big for the government to deal with? Who is going to deal with it while the Republicans “Jam” their heads into the sand or up the ass of the nearest insurance company lobbyist?

This is the issue; if the GOP can look at the last forty years and utter “the alleged health care crisis” then they have no business in the governance of this country.

They haven’t the vision.

They haven’t the fortitude.

They haven’t the intellect.

They haven’t got the best interests of the American people in mind.

Health care reform will be done, it will be done by Democrats for the future of the country and its peoples. The thirty year transfer of wealth from the poor and middle classes to the ultra wealthy will be temporarily paused. Where we go from there will likely depend on people who are willing to mobilize to push further, hopefully we will all be a little bit healthier for the fight.

I guess for me the most disturbing take away from the health care summit is the media’s praise of the Republicans for “consistency of message” as if being disciplined in your performance somehow matters more than the substance of the debate. Seriously, the media is grading the performance of the Republicans because they were able to turn the debate back to their talking points over and over and they never forgot to mention them?

I thought that we had all pretty much acknowledged that there is a real health care crisis in the United States. Did not the media all report on the gargantuan rate increases being sought by Wellpoint in various states only days ago? So in a unique venue to air these differences and justify positions the media comes down on the side of consistent talking points…

What about truth?

What about accuracy?

What about an acknowledgement that the finances and even lives of American citizens may very well hang in the balance?

Why should politicians try to legislate with truth and facts if the watchdogs are going to grade them on style points?

Want better government?

Start by demanding that the media quit pandering to the reality TV mentality and report the news of the country like there is more at stake than American Idol.

BTW. The Republicans want to “start over” because the Senate has already passed the bill… If the house passes the same bill health care reform is done and the Republicans are irrelevant (just so you know).

* There were no death panels, that was a distraction meant to kill reform and distort the process (also no apologies for the death panels or other distractions).

* The GOP feels that their strongest argument is the fact that the Senate bill polls poorly even though they are largely responsible for the misperceptions that exist about the Senate bill (see the last note about “death panels”).

* The GOP cites how poorly the Senate bill polls while completely ignoring the fact that the “public option” is wildly popular in polls, are they advocating the public option?

* The bill is not unconstitutional and saying it doesn’t make it so

* The bill is not a government takeover of healthcare and saying it doesn’t make it so.

* The GOP seems to acknowledge the size of the problem and yet only offer miniscule solutions, or none at all.

* Blaming those that are sick on eating badly is just fucking stupid and mean.

* Saying that stripped down catastrophic plans are going to be good enough to save lives medically and financially is so intellectually dishonest it boggles the mind.

* Agreeing to the principle and refusing to deal with it in your proposals exposes your true stance, those that have, have. Those that do not have won’t at least not anytime soon but maybe we can make it better for those who have… anyone for a tax cut?

Serious problems require serious solutions from serious people, if the GOP is not up to the task perhaps they should step aside for people who will.

Dear Congressional Democrats;

I know many of you wish the health care debate would just go away. I know that many of you view this fight as a zero sum game. I know that many of you are fully and fiercely engaged in the struggle. As we near the health care summit and what I hope will be the successful resolution to this fight there are a few points that I would ask you to remember.
The House has passed a bill.
The Senate has passed a bill.
The Senate is less likely today to pass the House version than before the MA election.
The path to substantial, meaningful, monumental health care reform is within your grasp.
Don’t lose sight of the most important points that the Senate bill DOES address.
Insurance companies won’t be able to continue discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.
Insurance companies will not be allowed to continue their practices of canceling coverage when Americans get sick.
Insurance companies will be prevented from dodging their contractural obligations with annual or lifetime “caps”.
Individuals who do not get their insurance at work will be able to purchase through an exchange which will greatly enhance their ability to find good coverage that is affordable.
Thirty-one million American citizens that currently are uninsured will be covered.
Is this bill perfect? Hell no! But the reality is that the things mentioned above all exist in the system today. Everyday people all over this nation are financially, emotionally and physically crushed by our health care system and I am unwilling to gamble more lives on a bet that we can get better this cycle. Pass the damn bill. Pass more after that, but make a stand that human health in this country is as important as spending on the apparatuses of war.
A bill has passed the House. A bill has passed the Senate. Figure out how to get a bill to the President for signature. Please Democrats now is the time to pass the most important legislation that many of you will ever work on. Some will suffer politically for doing so, some will find political advantage but that is not the point. Now you have to do the peoples business regardless of the consequence to you… In other words “come back carrying your shields or on them” we will honor your service.

Respectfully

R. Paine

P.S. Senate Democrats, could you declare your support/opposition to the public option NOW, we really don’t need the distraction if the effort is a pipe dream.

P.P.S. The Stupak, language in the health care bills is petty and cruel, holding 31 million Americans hostage to kill a procedure that is legal in this country is despicable, feel free to let him know that I feel that way (kicking him in the shins is also permissible).

Attention those that bring us political news; I am sick and tired of the split screen, one Democrat, one Republican, one hockey puck of a political question in which;

1)      Nothing of substance is said, talking points only.

2)      The one that speaks loudest or is simply more rude “wins”.

3)      There is no attempt to police the veracity of assertions.

4)      No resolution cause “we’ll have to leave it there”.

This style of journalism does nothing to serve your viewership, personally I feel like I am being slapped in the face every time I see this ridiculous device employed.

Try this, if you want to have a couple of pundits weigh in on a subject fine. First have a couple of your interns do research on the question so you can rebut the talking points and correct statements that are not factual. Second give your guests the opportunity to state their case if it is worth having them on, it’s worth having them on long enough to make the point that you apparently cared enough to ask for. Third if an actual debate breaks out, let it run! Give you audience enough respect to finish what you started. Finally I think that is completely appropriate to summarize factual inaccuracies that YOUR guests make on YOUR show, in fact I think that you owe your audience that much.

Of course if you want to drop the staged pundit cage fight paradigm completely, even better.

The health care summit coming up on Thursday is quite important, it is critically important to the American people but the reason might surprise you. The health care summit is necessary due to a failure of the national media.

The debate surrounding health care reform or health insurance reform or the government takeover of health care or the pulling of the plug… Has proceeded in the open, in the media and largely on two separate playing fields.
The average American does not time into C-SPAN2 to watch the debates in the Senate. The average American does not download and read the text of the proposed legislation and grapple with what the ramifications of those proposals will be. Most Americans tune into the news that they identify with and believe the impressions that they get from the various pundits accept those views as fact and form their views about the legislation based on a sound bite not sound fact.

So the Republicans watch Fox report about death panels and government takeovers and that is their reality of health care reform.

Democrats watch MSNBC report about insurance company boondoggles and caving in to corporate interests and that becomes their reality of health care reform.

Now before you get too upset please note that I realize that MY readership does not at all reflect the average American, I expect that anyone reading this post is much more informed than your average Joe. The point is that regardless of your politics or ideology, you have been able to watch the debate unfold exactly according to your preconceptions. For most people there hasn’t BEEN a debate, only a reinforcement of belief.

The health care summit holds the very real possibility of being the first time many Americans get to witness actual debate on an issue that is critically important to the future of the country. People of good conscience that believe in the tenets of democracy cannot possibly think that a debate of this kind is a bad thing. Debate in the open, on the same playing field in front of the American people benefits all that would participate with truth and honor. If the GOP believes they have real, viable solutions to the issues that face the country with respect to health care how could the spotlight of a health care summit be a trap? If your ideas are worthy of debate, what better forum could the President of the United States offer the minority party than a high profile, televised debate?
The health care summit is important because the American people need to know what is really being proposed. The people need to hear the relative benefits and sacrifices of proposals. The people need to see honorable engagement by their elected officials in this issue. The people need the truth, not the spin about the distortion about the misinterpretation of the truth.
The people need a government of by and for the people to respect, inform and include the people.

If the minority party thinks that the health care summit is a stunt I would have to counter that giving them this forum is quite generous if they really want to be part of the solution.

That the GOP wants to be part of the solution remains debatable.

I am so sick of hearing one conservative or another using the phrase “jamming it down our throats” I swear half of them are closet fluffers protesting their secret desires. Ultimately the meme “jamming it down our throats” is disgusting, disrespectful and only truly accurate in current political rhetoric to waterboarding which is only advocated by conservatives.
It is only the latest example of Republicans telling you what to fear from Democrats when they are the ones guilty of the accused behavior.

“Democrats are fiscally irresponsible” - Republican administrations spent 82% of the national debt.

“Democrats take away our freedoms” – the patriot act, warrantless wiretapping, suspension of habeas corpus and torture are all Republican programs and the biggest blows to freedom in this country since the internment camps of WWII.

“Democrats make us less safe” – The examples of torture and unlimited detentions set at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo were the most powerful recruiting tools the terrorist could have possibly hoped for.

So when a Republican says that he doesn’t have any problem with gays he just doesn’t want them “jamming it down our throats” I say that the LEGAL definition of marriage shouldn’t have nothing to do with YOUR religion that you apparently want to “jam down our throats”.

And when Republicans say that the Democrats are going to jam health care reform “down the throats of the American people I say that Obama received more votes for president than any candidate EVER, and he ran on a platform of health care reform.

The Republicans are the ones doing the jamming around here.
Jamming an ill advised war with faulty intelligence down our throats.
Jamming a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans as the standard of living for everyone else declined.
Jamming the stripping of regulations of our environment and financial institutions.
Jamming the trashing of rights with warrantless wiretaps, torture and endless dententions.
So I don’t want to hear their disgusting little saying anymore, it’s crass, it’s disrespectful and near as I can tell it is their sin not ours. If of course they don’t quite “get it” I welcome them to print out this blog post, roll it up, AND JAM IT DOWN THEIR THROAT!

CPAC started this morning in Washington DC. For those of you who might not know CPAC stands for Corporate Policy Acting Conservative… No that’s not right, Crass Pigs Advocating Corporatism? Crappy Politicians Aiding Corporations? Corporate Pretenders Acting Centrist? Callous Pariah Advocating Crap? Causing Paralysis Above Consensus? Now I remember, it stands for Conservative Political Action Conference and the annual meeting started today.

The hot topic for the first day of CPAC seems to be that the President of the United States has used, on more than one occasion, a teleprompter! It is also reported that he frequently makes use of the wheel and indoor plumbing. What the hell is wrong with these people that they try to make something out of nothing? Isn’t there some substantive policy issues that you would like to cap on the President for? Has Obama robbed you of all validity and you really are left with nothing but made up crap to harp about?

The United States is in two wars. The economy is recovering from the worst recession since the great depression. The President just had to create a deficit commission because the Republicans refused to vote for an initiative they co sponsored. Health insurers across the country are threatening to raise premiums up to almost 40%. The filibuster is being abused like at no time in the history of the nation… And the Conservative Political Action Conference is obsessed with the use of teleprompters. Heaven help us if these people ever regain power.

Snap out of it! The two party system only really works if there are two parties and the right is driveling on about nonsensical bullshit at a time that we need adults to solve real problems. It reminds me of a quote from “The American President” that one of my readers sent me recently.

Being President of this country is entirely about character. For the record: yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But the more important question is why aren’t you, Bob? Now, this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question: Why would a senator, his party’s most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the Constitution? If you can answer that question, folks, then you’re smarter than I am, because I didn’t understand it until a few hours ago. America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, ’cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say “You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can’t just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the “land of the free”. I’ve known Bob Rumson for years, and I’ve been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn’t get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob’s problem isn’t that he doesn’t get it. Bob’s problem is that he can’t sell it! We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who’s to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections… We’ve got serious problems, and we need serious people, and if you want to talk about character, Bob, you’d better come at me with more than a burning flag and a membership card. If you want to talk about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and I’ll show up. This is a time for serious people, Bob, and your fifteen minutes are up. My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I *am* the President.

It is the one year anniversary of the signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act a/k/a the stimulus bill. For those still trashing the stimulus on a partisan basis and not a factual one, don’t bother to study the chart above, you will find a way to delude yourself into believing something else anyway. For those inclined to incorporate facts into your world view, the above represents job losses in the United States during the presidency of Barack Obama and an equal amount of time from the end of the presidency of George W. Bush.

This is not a particularly new chart, but the anniversary and the brilliant job that Rachel Maddow has done exposing the hypocrisy of the GOP with respect to the stimulus warranted a fresh airing of the facts (watch Rachel call them out on not being embarrassed here).

So Donald Trump thinks that Al Gore should have his Nobel prize taken away because the East Coast of the United States has had the coldest winter on record… For the record, since when are we supposed to value the opinion of a fat blowhard developer over thousands of climate scientists on the issue of global climate change? And why exactly would anyone pay attention to this obvious layperson? Because “The Donald” is rich? Does wealth matter more to our society than knowledge? Is celebrity its own qualification today in America? I am famous therefore I can speak to issues completely beyond my hilariously coiffed melon head?

How long are we seriously going to put up with celebrities getting a turn in the news cycle for weighing in on global climate change? When will we collectively scream stop to allowing people like Joe the Plumber and Sarah “You-Betcha” Palin to be taken seriously is discussions of national import? Our laws, our media, our values, our politics and the future of our very nation are being reduced to the level of a reality show.

When will we value knowledge over celebrity? When will we value honor over glamour? And integrity over intrigue? What about values over hollow sound bites about those values? The GOP have become snake oil salesmen promising everything and delivering nothing but a little more debt, a little worse standard of living, a little less equality, a little more poverty, a few more people uninsured, a few more enemies that are a little more motivated, a poorer school system, a larger gap between the haves and the have-nots, a few more children with a little less to eat…

And then they pull out the same old sorry talking points that worked for the last thirty years and say that government is evil and sell us down the river for corporate greed and perpetual war. The GOP have failed the American people and the facts of that failure are overwhelming. The milk toast media won’t tell you it is because they mostly work for the huge corporations that have fared very well while the average people do worse and worse working harder and harder for less and less. The towering hypocrisy that is the GOP today boggles the mind and yet their many sins are buried in the news by a fat rich guy with funky hair giving an opinion on things that are far beyond his ego laden grasp…

The individual players in the media should be truly ashamed for their complete lack of journalistic integrity in the protection of our democracy.

Tonight I am personally challenging anyone in television media to attempt the level of factual, intelligent aggressive journalism that Rachel Maddow exhibits every single day on The Rachel Maddow Show and whenever she graces the set of Meet the Press.

Watch and learn people, this is what journalism is supposed to be and she flat schools you all five days a week.

And Donald? Shut the fuck up, dumbass!
